The kit big prints actually need
Every tool on this site is free and runs in your browser. The physical side of a large multi-part print is the part that costs money — and the part where the wrong purchase wastes a weekend.
This page is grouped by the job you are doing rather than by product category, and every entry says why it matters and which tool it pairs with. It deliberately names no prices and no specific brands: prices move, listings get delisted, and nothing here has been bench-tested by us. Each link opens an Amazon UK search so you can compare what is actually available and well-reviewed today.
If you buy three things, buy these
- 1. Digital calipers. Everything downstream depends on measurement. The Tolerance Calibrator is unusable without them, and a caliper reading is what separates "my printer is broken" from "my printer is 0.15 mm out".
- 2. A filament dryer. Damp filament is the single most common cause of a printer that seems to have quietly got worse. It shows up as popping, stringing and weak layers, and no slicer setting fixes it.
- 3. Cyanoacrylate glue with activator. The moment you use Slicer Pro to split a model, you are in the assembly business. Activator sets a seam in seconds, which matters when you are holding two heavy segments aligned by hand.
Filament & storage
A one-metre model is measured in kilos, not grams. Run your model through the Mega Estimator first so you know how much you need, then buy in multi-packs from a single batch — colour drifts noticeably between production runs, and a segmented print shows every shift at the seams.
Bed adhesion
Wide, flat footprints — exactly what the Build Plate Packer produces — put adhesion under the most stress, and a failure at hour nine costs you the whole plate.
Joining & assembly
DowelPro sizes its holes for standard off-the-shelf stock, and the Adhesive Calculator tells you how much glue a given seam area needs before you start mixing.
Sanding & finishing
Mostly consumables, and mostly cheap. The seam down the middle of an assembled model is the first thing a viewer notices and the easiest thing to make disappear.
Measuring & calibration
The shortest list here and the highest value. You cannot fix a tolerance problem you cannot measure, and press-fit joints live or die on a tenth of a millimetre.
Removal & cleanup
The five minutes after a print finishes decide how much of the next hour you spend repairing it. Blunt cutters and a screwdriver used as a chisel account for a remarkable share of damaged prints.
Printer maintenance
Wear parts. If quality has degraded slowly over months rather than failing suddenly, the answer is almost always on this list — check it before you read anything into a G-code Inspector trace.
Environment & safety
Multi-day prints are at the mercy of the room they sit in, and an unattended heater running overnight deserves a working smoke alarm above it.
Resin & hollowed models
Hollowing is mostly a resin workflow, and resin is a chemical process. The Hollowing & Drainage tool saves you 60–75% of the material; the safety kit below is not the place to economise.
Lighting & electrics
A shade from the Lampshade Generator or a panel from the Lithophane Generator is only half the object. PLA softens around 60 °C, so LED sources are the only safe choice inside a printed shade.
Photo capture & display
House Mode and the lithophane workflow both start from photographs, and they are only ever as good as the shots you feed them.
